Increased resilience for vulnerable communities in Totonicapán in the context of COVID-19: Food Safety and Preventive Health

This project aims to contribute to food security and improved nutrition of the K’iché ethnic population of 4 communities in the Department of Totonicapán, Guatemala, whose situation has been aggravated by the effects of COVID-19. Special attention will be paid to minors and women in situations of nutritional vulnerability.

To achieve this, special emphasis will be placed on the creation of community structures and institutional strengthening that contribute to the sustainability of the results related to the availability of food, as well as health and nutritional well-being, especially in women and children.

Through the figure of agricultural promoters (men and women), comprehensive monitoring activities will be carried out, which will include diagnosis, recommendations, updates, training, knowledge transfer, assistance, empowerment and development of skills in agricultural producers (men and women). The value of the community, the care of natural resources and the development of self-management skills will be promoted.

Volunteer health promoters, men and women will acquire skills to promote hygiene habits, nutritional health and capacities related to effective forms of preventive health.

In addition, nutritional surveillance committees will be formed whose main objective will be to follow up on identified cases of malnutrition, both in minors and in pregnant mothers.

Working with women will strengthen their role in decision-making spaces, influencing the development of their potential.
