As of today, 84 families from the Al-Baqaa fishing cooperative, located in in southern Lebanon in Tiro, can count on a new residential complex comprised of 84 state subsidized homes and business premises.

Lebanon, June 9, 2008. The inauguration of this residential complex, benefiting close to 500 people, signifies the culmination of one of the major projects, principally financed by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID), under the framework “Development Strategy in the Mediterranean 2001-04 Co-Financed by The FPSC.”

This project was carried out by the FPSC, its local member ADR, and the Al-Baqaa Fishing Cooperative. This cooperative was formed in 1992 with this goal in mind and since then, the members have contributed to the building of these homes with a monthly quota of $1.00.

The following participated in the inauguration: the Spanish Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Miguel Benzo; the President of FPSC, Mrs. Pilar Lara; the President of the Association for the Development of Rural Capacities (ADR), Mr. Youssef El Khalil; the Al-Baqaa Fishing Cooperative; the Honorary President, Mrs. Jumana Trad, of the Euro Arabic Network for Development and Integration (READI); as well as several other civilians and religious authorities from Tiro.

Hashim Sarkis, University of Harvard snf who received four prestigious, international prizes, is the architect who designed this project.

84 fisherman and their families in Tiro benefit from this project, some 480 people. The importance lies in that the fishing community of Tiro is one of the most vulnerable because it suffers directly from the political, economic, and social instability as well as from the nature of this profession of inconsistent and low income.
