The project “Increasing agricultural productivity with environmental and gender focus in East Wellega (Oromiya) Ethiopia”, financed by AECID, envisages the creation of three cooperatives, one for each district or Woreda which is being implemented: Diga, Guto Guida and Sasiga.
Last 29 September, the first one was registered, “Jalala Saving and Credit Co-operative Society”, composed of kebele Badhasa Jarso farmers, belonging to the woreda of Sasiga. At first it starts with a number of 57 farmers, 43 men and 14 women, but it is expected that during the life of the project reaches 150 members.
Through these cooperative the farmers are receiving agricultural packages as needed (improved seeds, fertilizers, agricultural tools, etc.) in order to improve its agricultural production. These provisions will have to be returned to the group once they have generated profit in agricultural production, in cash, thus creating a fund that will be used in the future by all the group members. It is expected that over time both the number of members and the fund will grow, so it will be necessary for the committee of the cooperative to have the capacity to manage their resources. To this end, committee members will get training in basic accounting.
During the project implementation, the beneficiaries will be organized through cooperatives to discuss the implementation of the activities provided herein (control of termites, design and implementation of irrigation systems, etc.) and create work groups that will take charge of each of them.
