Efficient and sustainable production systems of the hydro biological resources of Sechura Bay have been increased on equal terms. Phase 2
This project represents a second phase of another previous project financed by the Regional Governmente of Madrid and completed in November 2021, to continue working with fishermen, mariculturists and their families in the implementation of comprehensive strategies that lead them to improve processes production, to diversify production, and to improve management in the face of the challenges of natural disasters and climate change.
Specifically, the efficient management of production units and the diversification of aquaculture and its commercialization in the markets will help improve the income level of mariculturists and their families, food security and the preservation of the ecosystem through good practices and proper management of resources to make them sustainable over time.
To this end, work will be done on:
- Productive activities, with advice on the cultivation and management of the scallop shell (Argopecten purpuratus) in a suspended system, to establish the economic-productive balance that allows the associations of mariculture fishermen to manage their cultivation areas and generate the seed sustainably.
- Development of productive diversification to carry out pilot experiences of species such as the macroalgae “mococho” or “yuyo” (Chondracanthus chamissoi) in a suspended system, and the management of the resource “fin clam” (Transennella pannosa), with permanent monitoring, which will help determine the viability of its cultivation in Sechura Bay, and transfer it to the artisanal fishing sector.
- Raise awareness of gender equality, promoting the development of skills, the generation of knowledge and the participation of women in productive activities, in order to achieve better economic opportunities. With this, it seeks to achieve the visibility and inclusion of women in terms of equality, establishing awareness processes to change attitudes in the distribution of roles in households, so that women have time for their training and participation in decision-making processes.
- Promote the strengthening of capacities and abilities, in relation to the care of the marine-coastal environment and its influence on climate change.
Work will be done in 7 Coves of the Sechura Bay, in three components linked to economic, social and environmental sustainability, the three indivisible pillars marked by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, contributing to generate resilient and sustainable livelihoods.
The project will work involving both holders of rights and responsibilities (through associations) and obligations (authorities of the city of Sechura), creating a joint action plan and formalizing said collaboration through agreements.
The set of designed activities also incorporate the adoption of health measures aimed at preventing the transmission of COVID-19.
